Red Teaming and Perception Analysis

In an era of constrained budgets and heightened threats, good red teaming is more important than ever. Whatever your domain or mission, the last thing you want to do is misunderstand your opponent, overlook a critical vulnerability, or chart a strategy based on bad assumptions. You want to get the most out of your resources – red teaming is one of the most powerful approaches available to you.

So, what exactly does Watermark do? While we can certainly red team for you, our primary offering is to help you red team better. We have divided our red teaming service into six functions. We can help you perform any or all of these functions. In other words, it’s a menu, and you choose the functions you need.

For example, if you have a basic red teaming capability but are struggling with how to analyze and package your findings, we can support you with functions four and five. Alternatively, if you need help setting up a team but want to run it yourself, you can ask us to help you with functions one and two. It’s your choice; you combine the functions to fit your requirements. And if you’re uncertain about your requirements, we can analyze your needs and suggest a combination that suits your situation.

Function six is a unique Watermark service. We refer to it as perception analysis. It is a simple but structured approach to help you model the risk and opportunity inherent in perception, misperception, and deception. Specifically, perception analysis can help you:

Explore how your adversaries might surprise you (and how you might

surprise them),

Anticipate and shape your competitors’ responses, and

Discern and counter your opponents’ deceptions.

We generally employ perception analysis as a complement to other forms of analysis. In addition to red teaming, candidate applications include risk analysis, intelligence analysis, and political analysis.

Why should you choose Watermark? Our director of red teaming, Dr. Mark Mateski, founded the Web’s premier red teaming site, Red Team Journal, in 1997. For over 15 years, he has pioneered the application of practical, structured techniques to the art of red teaming and is widely recognized as a thought leader in the red teaming community. Additionally, the Watermark team has decades of operational security and management experience with a wide variety of organizations. It’s unusual to find this kind of balance in the same consultancy; we’re equally comfortable in the field, the classroom, and the boardroom.
